What happens to your garments once you no longer wear them? It’s possible that your discarded jacket has made its way to Panipat, India, one of world’s largest textile recycling hubs.
Shipping bales filled with worn, discarded clothes that have been reimported from all over the world, arrive at Kandla port in Gujarat and make their way to Panipat. The clothes are sorted by material and those that are not damaged or torn are sold as they are.
Women spend 8-9 hours a day sorting garments by material (cotton, wool, nylon, etc) and then colour. After they remove the lining from the garments, all non-textile objects are removed from the garments so that they are made fit for the next step – shredding. It is after the shredding that the ‘shoddy’ yarn is carded and made into fibre that can be wound into yarn that is re-used for weaving once again.

  (XS-M): Smallest loop for XS is placed at 66cm/26" with 2 more loops placed 8cm/3" apart. Last loop is placed at 82cm/32". Total waist is 116cm/46"
  (M-XL): Smallest loop for M is placed at 79cm/31" with 2 more loops placed 10cm/4" apart. Last loop is placed is placed at 99cm/39". Total waist is 128cm/49"
  (L-XXL): Smallest loop for L is placed at 91cm/36" with 2 more loops placed 10cm/4" apart. Last loop is placed at 111cm/44". Total waist is 146cm.
